Shodoshima Island was created about 14 million years ago by volcanic activities in the Seto Inland Sea. The island is blessed with full of beautiful natural landscapes of mountains and seashores, including the Kankakei Gorge.
It can be represented by: Island of Shodoshima 88 Temple Pilgrimage; Island of healing; Island of traditions inherited across successive generations such as Rural Kabuki and Mushiokuri Festival; Island of stone culture; Island of industries such as soy sauce, sesame oil, somen noodles, olive, and tsukudani. The year of 2016, the 3rd Setouchi Triennale will be held.
